One of my favorite things about living near New York is discovering those little spots that bring life and beauty into our homes. Over the years, I’ve shared everything from the best hotels to must-try pizza shops, but one topic I get asked about constantly is where to buy plants in and around NYC.
Whether you’re hunting for a leafy monstera to brighten your living room, herbs for your windowsill, or a show-stopping floral arrangement, the city and its neighboring corners of New Jersey are full of plant havens. Some offer the convenience of local delivery, others are worth hopping on a train (or car ride) for the unbeatable selection and prices.
Here’s a curated list of favorites—both tried-and-true and highly recommended—so you can find your own little urban jungle.
NYC Favorites
Chelsea Garden Center
Red Hook: 444 Van Brunt St | Williamsburg: 87 Havemeyer St
For over three decades, Chelsea Garden Center has been the go-to for New Yorkers looking to turn their balconies, rooftops, or backyards into thriving green escapes. Their Williamsburg location is especially impressive, with tropical houseplants shipped straight from Hawaii and Florida, chic pottery, teak furniture, and all the tools you need. They’re known as the experts in urban gardening, so if you’re after design inspiration or landscaping advice, this is your stop.
Green Fingers Market
Nolita: 5 Rivington St
Created by Japanese plant artist Satoshi Kawamoto, this little shop feels like stepping into a living art installation. Think succulents tumbling out of wooden crates, lush ferns tucked into corners, and terrariums displayed like jewels. While the price tags can lean steep, it’s a perfect destination for design inspiration or one-of-a-kind plant pieces. Even if you’re not ready to commit, wandering through is a creative spark on its own.
J Rose Wholesale Flowers
117 W 28th St
Though technically more flower-focused than plant-focused, J Rose deserves a mention. Their rose selection is spectacular and their prices surprisingly reasonable. Whenever I’m nearby, I can’t resist stopping in to bring home a bunch of blooms.
Kings County Nurseries
Prospect Lefferts Gardens: 625 New York Ave
This family-run garden center has been serving Brooklyn since 1955 and offers a little bit of everything: seeds, shrubs, trees, pottery, tools, and tropical houseplants. Their organic soils are a local favorite, and they also provide landscaping services. If you’re looking for guidance beyond just picking up a plant, this is where you’ll find thoughtful advice and plenty of expertise.
Noble Plants
106A W 28th St (Flower District)
Nestled in Manhattan’s Flower District, Noble Plants is run by a husband-and-wife team who’ve been in the business for decades. Beyond the wide variety of plants, simply strolling the block is a treat—rows upon rows of florists and plant shops make this area a one-stop destination for anyone looking to fill their home with greenery.
PlantShed
Upper West Side: 209 W 96th St
PlantShed takes plant shopping to the next level with a rooftop greenhouse and a beautifully curated selection of both indoor and outdoor greenery. They’re also eco-minded, offering sustainable products and services, and their pottery collection is just as enticing as their plants. A perfect stop if you’re looking for both a plant and a chic vessel to display it in.
Sprout Home
Williamsburg: 59 Grand St
Originally from Chicago, Sprout Home brings a modern, design-focused touch to the Brooklyn plant scene. Their in-house designers create stunning floral arrangements, but they also specialize in garden installations for homes and businesses. Whether you’re sprucing up your apartment or styling an event, they’ll help you bring your vision to life.
Urban Garden Center
East Harlem: 1640 Park Ave
This sprawling, family-owned garden center offers everything from seeds and tools to sod and firewood. They pride themselves on sustainable practices and local sourcing, and they’re open year-round. With delivery options across NYC, it’s a convenient choice if you’re building (or maintaining) your own little urban oasis.
Worth the Trip: NJ Favorites
14th Street Garden Center
Jersey City: 793 Jersey Ave
Just across the river, this family-owned shop is beloved for its wide range—from herbs and annuals to bamboo and large outdoor plants. They’ll pot your purchases for you and even offer delivery, which makes them a top pick for city dwellers who don’t want to lug heavy pots home.
Metropolitan Plant & Flower Exchange
West Orange: 471 Mt Pleasant Ave (with locations in Paramus & Fort Lee)
This one comes highly recommended by a trusted plant-loving friend. While I haven’t personally been, she swears it’s worth the drive for the expansive selection and fair pricing.
Metropolitan Farm
Closter: 119 Hickory Ln
Dating back to the 1700s, Metropolitan Farm is the oldest working farm in New Jersey. For over 30 years, they’ve specialized in perennials that can handle harsh winters and hot summers. Their knowledgeable staff is always ready to offer advice, and as a bonus, they also raise chickens and sell farm-fresh eggs.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re browsing the Flower District, making a quick stop in Brooklyn, or planning a mini road trip to Jersey, there’s no shortage of plant shopping opportunities in and around NYC. Some spots specialize in chic, design-focused greenery, while others are perfect for stocking up on hardy outdoor plants or unique houseplants.
If you’re local and think I’ve missed a hidden gem, let me know—I love discovering new plant havens. After all, in a city as fast-paced as ours, filling our spaces with a little extra green feels like the ultimate luxury.
