Weekend Notes: April 20

Spring break has officially landed in New York City, which means the kids are out of school for twelve days straight. Twelve. Days. Straight. We don’t have any elaborate travel plans this year—just a quick escape to our Pennsylvania lake house with a few friends. The slower pace will be nice, but truthfully, the real adventure is still under wraps: in May, we’re pulling the kids out of school for a week-long trip to Disney and Universal.

They have no idea.

I can already picture their faces when we tell them, especially Nate. He’s deep in the Harry Potter universe right now and has been not-so-subtly asking when we’ll finally take him to see it all in person. We’re going during what’s supposed to be an “off-week,” so fingers crossed the crowds are less than the usual madness.

Girls’ Trip in the Works

On the adult side of travel plans, a couple of girlfriends and I are trying to cobble together a Euro trip for June. It’s completely last minute, so I’m not holding my breath, but I’m excited just thinking about it. Our original plan was Paris, but with the Olympics happening this summer, that dream quickly got shelved. Now we’re torn between Spain and Portugal.

I’ve only been to Barcelona, and the other girls haven’t been to either destination, so it feels like the perfect opportunity to explore someplace new together. If you’ve been to either and have favorites to share, please send them my way—I’m all ears.

Is the Balenciaga City Bag Back?

A little fashion nostalgia moment: the Balenciaga City bag. Is it making its comeback? Personally, it’s never been “out.” For me, it’s not just a handbag; it’s a symbol of a certain time in my life. I actually wrote a longer, more personal piece on Substack diving into that memory lane trip, and it stirred up all sorts of feelings about how fashion isn’t just about trends—it’s about chapters of our lives.

Speaking of Substack, I’ve been sharing more vulnerable posts there lately, particularly about aging, how the industry has shifted, and what it means to grow through it all. It feels good to step away from surface-level chatter and write about the deeper stuff, even when it’s a little scary to hit publish.

What I’m Reading (And Loving)

Okay, confession: my reading taste often veers into smutty territory. No shame here—I like what I like. Years ago, when I read The Idea of You (still one of my all-time favorites), I joined the book’s Facebook group, and I’ve stayed ever since just for the endless recommendations.

Someone recently suggested Older. It’s not for everyone, but I can’t put it down. It’s the kind of story you sneak chapters of when you should be sleeping.

Links & Little Things

A few things that caught my attention this week and felt worth sharing:

  • People Watching as a Sport: There’s a new piece on why it’s a true New Yorker’s pastime, and I couldn’t agree more. Hands down, it’s my favorite city hobby.
  • Spring Décor Ideas: Easy little updates to brighten your home as the days get longer.
  • The 100 Best Hotels of the New Year: Already daydreaming about where to book next.
  • Shows & Movies to Watch in April: A few are already on my list for cozy nights in.
  • Lessons from a 70-Year-Old Former NYC Influencer: Equal parts inspiring and grounding.
  • Not Your Typical Brooklyn Townhouse: Worth a scroll if you love a little design inspo.
  • The 8 Best Green Teas to Try: Adding a few to my cart, because I’ve been on a tea kick lately.

What I Ordered

This week brought a few fun deliveries (and a few too many open boxes by the door).

  • Denim Shorts (in white): I loved the blue pair so much that I grabbed them in white. They fit true to size, but if you like a slouchier vibe, I’d recommend sizing up.
  • A Basket Bag: Even prettier in person than I expected—structured, well-made, and begging to be taken on vacation.
  • AEYDE Sandals: One of my favorite shoe brands, and these feel like the perfect spring/summer staple. Will keep you posted on comfort after a few wears.

Beauty & Wellness

I’ve been experimenting with the SŌM Microneedle Eye Patches. They’re definitely on the pricier side, but so, so good. If you want to try them, my code Helena20 gets you 20% off.

Also, Sunday (April 21) is the last day of the Early Bird sale for one of our household favorites: CBD/low-THC gummies. They’re perfect for winding down—half takes the edge off, while a full one gives you a gentle buzz without the hangover. Highly recommend if you’re curious.

Food & Recipes

I’m planning to make Thai Chicken & Pineapple Stir Fry from Skinny Taste this week. I love a quick, one-pan meal that manages to feel fresh and bright, and this one checks all the boxes.

Random Musings

Ever wake up after a night out and replay the entire conversation in your head? I had one of those nights recently, especially with newer friends where I’m still finding my rhythm. The next morning I caught myself thinking: Did I say too much? Dominate the conversation? Overshare?

Apparently, I’m not alone. I stumbled across a piece called “Why I’m going on a silent retreat after realizing how much I talked at the hang last night,” and it hit way too close to home.

Here’s to a fresh week ahead—whether you’re juggling school breaks, sneaking in a little shopping, or just making it through the everyday chaos.

Have the best week!
